Armed with a dazzling collection of intimate beauty and fiery grit, the fifth full-length album The Bitter Truth from US rockers Evanescence is a startling return to form; a fact made all the sweeter after a year of physical distance, emotional turmoil and heightened unknowns both in the musical realms and beyond. And while it's been precisely a decade since an album of entirely new material has come to pass for fans of a band who simultaneously defy and shape their own unique pocket of dark and intimate rock and metal - it comes as little surprise that the end result of this latest release has been welcomed with open arms from fans and critics alike. After all, this is a band that ultimately helped ignite the sudden mainstream interest for heavier and underground genres back in the late 1990s and early 2000s for many; and their latest endeavour offers both a shattering blast from the past alongside scintillating new territories.
Acting as a portal for both healing and heroics amongst the fiery rock moments lying in wait, The Bitter Truth may have started life well and truly prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and all its gloomy trappings that would follow; and yet, the album acts as compelling proof that Evanescence are a truly timeless band, able to whip life's dark and bitter moments into blazing ecstasy and offer a beacon of hope brimming with riffs and charm. For many, the stylings of Amy Lee and Co. were a soundtrack for and a gateway to acceptance and self discovery, and decades later there's still a gamut of raw and honest grunt ready to shoulder your woes and have you take on the world. And what to celebrate this staggering new release, Tiana Speter grabbed a chat with Evanescence drum-lord Will Hunt himself, talking pandemic albums, stylistic pockets and how his journey with this iconic band officially began.
