SINGLE REVIEW: Space (HANDS LIKE HOUSES)

SINGLE Space // ARTIST Hands Like Houses

Finding the space between languished frustrations and shimmering melodics, Canberra rockers Hands Like Houses conjure a swaying and pertinent anthem with their brand new track Space dropping into the world late last week.

Forming over a decade ago from the ashes of disbanded projects, Hands Like Houses are no strangers to crafting heavy-hitting melodics with more ferocious persuasions. From their debut full-length back in 2012 to their most recent poppier outing on 2018's Anon, Hands Like Houses have continually proven themselves a mainstay of the rock world, albeit ones that aren't afraid to reach beyond the confines and keep their fans on their toes. From post-hardcore endeavours to more modern flair, HLH have never been afraid to reflect their own changing tastes and ideas, and it's on their latest track Space that this Canberra bunch grapple with refining their creative concepts, while inadvertently capturing the turgid emotional wringer of life in a pandemic:

Specifically focusing on a particularly mentally and spatially suffocating time for the band while recording, Space is a rich tapestry of flickering beats, shifting textural intensity and melancholic guitars as vocalist Trenton Woodley plaintively shimmers in a literal cry for some much-needed space.

"I think the song really captures that pressure we felt having to refine our raw ideas and work through our differences in taste and personality while recording...It’s strange that that sense of emotional claustrophobia has fast-forwarded to this literal one with COVID-19. Since we tracked it, I haven’t actually read the lyrics written down until now and there’s a strange sense of deja vu, like I wrote them yesterday, with full knowledge of everything that’s happened in the last few months" - Trenton Woodley, vocals

Accompanied by a cinematic journey of a young woman searching for meaning before diving into the world of the band themselves, Space finds its anthemic feet recalling some of the brooding solemnity of Birds of Tokyo with a sharp textured undertow bearing flourishes of the familiar HLH brand. Ultimately, Space is an impassioned war-cry poised on the precipice of finding your feet after heartache and pain, and a sharp peek into the next chapter for this elegantly bold band.

"I wanted it to feel tired, not hopeless, worn out but not ready to give up just yet. I didn’t want it to sound like I’d stopped trying. I wanted it to feel like coming out of a long silence, to say ‘please be patient. I can get this right. I just need a little faith, a little trust, and a little bit of space to get myself back together." - Trenton Woodley
