SINGLE REVIEW: Nuclear Fusion (KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD)

SONG: Nuclear Fusion ARTIST: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard No matter what your opinion is about King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – it’s an undeniable fact that these boys can pump out albums like nobody’s business. And fresh off that controversy at the ARIAS, the madcap masters have today dropped the second single off their forthcoming ninth studio album (and first of FIVE promised albums for 2017) 'Flying Microtonal Banana'.

Hot on the heels of their previous earworm 'Rattlesnake', a nearly 8-minute track with a brain-bending accompanying video, second single 'Nuclear Fusion' further showcases the band’s exploration into microtonal tuning – earlier in the year front-man Stu Mackenzie requested extra frets be put into a custom-built guitar, granting him access to microtones (basically smaller "secret notes" not used traditionally in Western music). And - because why not? - the rest of the band members then underwent microtonal modification of their own instruments. The result? A distinctly Eastern-tone to the patchwork-rock sound traditionally favoured by the band.

'Nuclear Fusion' is perhaps less frantic than its older rampaging brother 'Rattlesnake' – but the hazy track borders on hypnotic, with a swirling, steady beat and a literal fusion of Eastern-inspired and psychedelic tones.

With a whole heap of music set to explode from the Gizz this year, it will be interesting to see what this group of ambitious madmen come up with next.
