EP: Munchausen ARTIST: Tall Pines
It's haze for days with Brissie grunge-gaze trio Tall Pines and their debut EP 'Munchausen'. Sporting three tracks and clocking in at just under 8 minutes all up, the band packs a whallop of sludgy guitars, walls of sound and the occasional moment of calm into a neat little package.
Title track 'Munchausen' plies breathy vocals over gloomy hooks, with a swift kick to the shins via the heavy climax. 'Highgate Hillsong' follows with skull-splitting distortion, before the emotive shoe-gaze love letter 'Splitting' rounds off the album.
It's refreshing to see a band adhere to a 'less is more attitude' in terms of content, and the result for Tall Pines is a stellar offering that showcases a band who can bathe in crushing reverb and still manage to paint complex emotive landscapes.
With plans to release a full-length album later this year, expect a lot more from this lot in the near future.
