What's Big and Sounds awesome? With the huge Big Sound Festival and Conference in Brisbane drawing to a close, The Soundcheck has snuck in an extra interview to celebrate a phenomenal few days of live music in the River City.
Previously we've featured Melbourne alt-soul machines The Cactus Channel, blues king Karl S. Williams, lovable indie rock larrikins The VANNS, post-rock heavyweights sleepmakeswaves and formidable Brisbane spunky punks WAAX - and to top it all off, meet beloved Brisbane indie-pop boys The Creases!
After the runaway success of debut single ‘I Won’t Wait’, released as a 7” by Rough Trade, The Creases went on to sign with Liberation Records in Australia. Their latest single 'Everybody Knows', also the title track to their debut album was released in early 2017 to rave reviews.
B (BACKSTORY) TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BAND AND HOW YOU GOT STARTED: The Creases started as a bit of a joke between Jarrod & I a few years ago and ended up (very quickly) becoming a serious project for us both. We would just record a song and video clip and put it out the same weekend on youtube and within a few weeks we had a record deal.
I (INFLUENCES) WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? ARE THERE ANY NOT-SO-OBVIOUS ONES? Bands like Joy Division, Slowdive and Echo & The Bunnymen were a starting point for me as a teenager when I first wanted to start a band. Also more recent bands like The Horrors are a huge influence on me. I just love anything that melodically is pop but is covered with noise.
G (GIGS) WHAT'S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE GIG SO FAR? Probably our hometown gig for our last single launch tour, it was sold-out and nuts. My dad crowd surfed and jumped on stage for a couple of songs too.
S (SONGS) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PLAY LIVE AND WHY? I think Point, it’s one of our oldest songs but I just don’t really get sick of it like others.
O (ONE OTHER BAND) WHO IS THE ONE BAND/ARTIST YOU WERE MOST PUMPED TO SEE LIVE AT BIG SOUND? The Harpoons
U (UPCOMING STUFF) WHAT HAVE YOU GOT ON THE HORIZON, ANY UPCOMING TOURS OR NEW RELEASES? We start our album tour the day after BigSound ends and it’s our biggest headline tour to date so far. We’ve never played a lot of the songs from the album live before so BigSound and this tour will be the first time people get to hear them. We’re super excited to just finally play a set of songs where everyone knows them all.
N (NAME) WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BAND NAME? A bit boring but there’s literally nothing behind The Creases name. I just had it scribbled down in a notebook amongst other names I had thought of when I first wanted to start a band.
D (DREAM TOUR) WHO IS YOUR DREAM BAND/ARTIST TO TOUR WITH? Blur!
