EP REVIEW: Enjoy (CROCODYLUS)

EP: Enjoy // ARTIST: Crocodylus

An ongoing fixture of the Aussie indie scene, Sydney trio Crocodylus show up strong, unveiling a shimmering array of distorted bliss and riotous reverb on their fan-focussed EP Enjoy.

With local and international audiences losing their minds over the latest influx of Aussie surf and psychedelic rockers, it's difficult for a band to firmly stick out amongst the pack if they find themselves so stylistically inclined. And while Sydney trio Crocodylus aren't seemingly reinventing the wheel, they are wielding it expertly while injecting their own unique flavour to the saturated indie rock world, and Enjoy is a shining example of why this lot have whipped up so much attention in such a short space of time.

Kicking the EP off with a bang, Ghosts drops first packed full of spooky undertones, the occasional frolicking piano and a rollicking chorus that'll rattle your bones into a hazy stupor. Up next, the sultry Madagascar goes for a spin coated in warm, sunny vibes like an Aussie summer day that stumbled into a Tarantino film.

MADAGASCAR (CROCODYLUS)

Following on is Where You Going, a boisterous garage rollicker that shows the Crocodylus gents in notably strong form, balancing textural restraint with blistering beats, as well as a particularly strong vocal outing for frontman Josh Williams. The remaining EP busts out a mix of vintage punk (Motivation, Adrenaline) and hazy psych (Kraut) as the trio deftly showcase their taut and sturdy technique in slightly denser sonic waters.

ADRENALINE (CROCODYLUS)

Ultimately, Enjoy is an EP that invites you to do as the title suggests, offering up party-ready jams that'll ignite dancefloors and surfboards all over the place. Dynamic, joyful and sharp as hell, Crocodylus are this decade's variation on the more deadpan aesthetics from Tame Impala and the like in the 2000s. Get set to be rendered into a reverb stupor and go enjoy this bewitching EP, preferably with a cold beverage and hammock for full effect.
