EP REVIEW: Home Truths (PATIENT SIXTY-SEVEN)

EP Home Truths // ARTIST Patient Sixty-Seven

Perth heavyweights Patient Sixty-Seven find beauty in the breakdown(s) with their razor-sharp new EP Home Truths set to erupt into the world next Friday.

A significant force in a dramatically thriving heavy scene in Western Australia, metalcore trio Patient Sixty-Seven are gifting us a delightfully devilish Valentine's Day gift next week with their hotly anticipated EP Home Truths set to roar to life on Friday 14 in true PSS fashion; brutal, beautiful and ballistic, with the occasional ambient reprieve.

A year in the making writing and recording, Home Truths is a culmination of sheer passion and emotional chaos as the group harness personal and broader highs and lows into a polished and ridiculously enjoyable good time across the short but sweet space of six tracks.

Kicking off Home Truths and highlighting the signature intensity bustling behind the Patient Sixty-Seven moniker is Help Inflicted, flitting between spitfire animosity and melodic twinkles. Packed full of chugging riffs and relentless beats, the opening track balances the light with the shade as the PSS gents give it all they got, while reminding you the unholy amount of noise they can whip up as a humble trio. Up next we're greeted with more djenty riffage mixed with acidic vocals and bleating beats as Where To From Here (co-written with Sleeping With Sirens frontman Kellin Quinn) unleashes its angst amongst some significant personal narratives, with frontman Tom Kiely's beseeching vocals declaring "this is not the end, I won't let you go, I can't let them take you" in reference to witnessing a family member go through the early stages of dealing with a life-altering illness.

WHERE TO FROM HERE (PATIENT SIXTY-SEVEN)

Continuing the themes of melody and mayhem, the PSS boys dish up sonic worlds build on menacing, swirling synthy strings and gutteral basslines (Blackout), rollicking metalcore with pop-flavoured spines (What's Left Of Us) before cavorting into the penultimate track Retrograde, full of mammoth arrangements, dark and heavy moments occasionally permeating proceedings and a chorus absolutely begging for lighters/phone torches/anything that lights up to be waved in the air as Patient Sixty-Seven embrace their anthemic best and welcome their demons and triumphs equally with open arms.

And just when you think you've got the Patient Sixty-Seven brand figured out, along comes the closing track for Home Truths - a reimagined version of What's Left Of Us, packed full of delay and electronic production that puts vocalist Tom Kiely on full display amid angelic mid pianos and whispered harmonics. As the lyrics "I forgive myself, but I will not forget, you'll be forever inside my head" swirl past, it's as though we've somewhat visited the stages of grief and found a resigned acceptance mixed with simmering serenity.

For a band increasingly infamous for melting faces and anything in their wake with their scathing brew of metalcore, Patient Sixty-Seven have shrewdly interspersed their strengths across razor-sharp brutality and measured composure with this latest endeavour. And while Home Truths may thematically explore unpleasant realities of the human existence, there's ultimately an underlying authentic sense of hope that elevates this EP from just a bit of heavy fun to something exhilirating in its elegant aggression that hits close to home in all the best ways.

GIFT YOURSELF SOME HEAVY GOODNESS AND GO GET YOUR EARS AROUND PATIENT SIXTY-SEVEN'S BRAND NEW EP HOME TRUTHS WHICH WILL OFFICIALLY UNVEIL NEXT FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14.
