ALBUM REVIEW: Liar (SHE CRIES WOLF)

ALBUM: Liar // ARTIST: She Cries Wolf

She Cries Surprise! QLD hardcore heavies She Cries Wolf yesterday hurled out their surprise third album 'Liar' into the world, gifting a bloodthirsty beast that brandishes its ferociously competent wares across the space of 11 tracks.

Carving up a significant following with their searing, raw tracks and merciless live energy, She Cries Wolf have rumbled into 2019 off a golden run years in the making; already armed with two previous full lengths (2015's 'Divorce' and 2016's 'Doubt'), supports and tours with the likes of Polaris, Parkway Drive, Every Time I Die and more, 'Liar' finds the Queensland quartet more potent, more powerful and, ironically, more honest than ever.

Having teased the seemingly stand-alone track 'Magdalene' during the week, featuring The Amity Affliction's Ahren Stringer on guest vocals, one thing is perfectly clear before even diving in to 'Liar': She Cries Alice are a band with a hell of a lot to say, and some gripping arsenal with which to say it.

Intro track 'Perjury' eases in to the chaos, with 'Magdalene' and 'Love Trader' carrying on the brooding brutality, covering depression and poor self esteem with relentless metalcore flair that threatens to leap through your speakers and tear the sun from the sky.

'MADGALENE' (SHE CRIES WOLF)

Hidden beneath the angst and acerbic tones lie some sparkling gems waiting to pounce; from bass-tastic bops ('October '16') to discordant ragers ('Victim Complex', 'Maternally Malignant'), melodic moments ('Genesis Flood') and gothic twinkles ('After Death'), there's no danger of boredom as the album draws its distorted web to a bombastic conclusion with closing track 'Exodus'.

Ultimately, there's a sense of cathartic menace at every turn on 'Liar' - no one and nothing is safe from the all-watchful eye of She Cries Wolf, with the album continuously wrapping the turbulence of reality in an abrasively affecting coat. Sure the expected hardcore and metalcore nods are all here; breakdowns, blast beats and blistering vocals reign supreme. But behind the conventional hallmarks also lies a carefully crafted package of musical anarchy; 'Liar' offers brutal escapism and brawling tones, and adamantly signals a red hot future for this heaving quartet.
