EP: I Please Myself ARTIST: Rackett
Like a ferocious rocket, Sydney riot-pop queens RACKETT have demolished 2018, leaving a wake of dynamic live shows and cheeky new tunes, culminating today in the release of their hotly anticipated sophomore EP ‘I Please Myself’.
Not to be outdone by their wildly successful debut year with the bombastic ‘Ready Or Not’ unveiled in 2017 alongside appearances with The Darkness, Killing Heidi and countless others, ‘I Please Myself’ takes the catchy tunes and infectious ‘tude to 11 with a cranking array of four tracks that are well and truly pleasing to behold.
Opening with the criminally fetching lead single ‘Tried To Quit’, the RACKETT ladies are at their impetuous best with coquettish melodies, swooning harmonies and just enough chugg to slice down the chaotic cuteness to a shiny roar. Swinging promptly next is the smoky title track, rolling out extra distortion and hazy vocals against some sturdy rhythmics.
TRIED TO QUIT (RACKETT)
Driving into the latter half of ‘I Please Myself’, ‘Kiss It Better’ pulls in some moody punkin’ grunge, complete with some sweet, bubbling melodics and razor-sharp riffs, before ‘FU’ rollicks up the ante and wraps bolstered instrumentation around catchy hooks and proverbial middle fingers.
There is very little mystery as to why RACKETT have swiftly evolved from local wizkids to national notoriety in such a short space of time – and, no, it’s not just because it’s a bunch of bad ass women spitting catchy fire and playing over 150 shows across 2017 and 2018. Instead, RACKETT have created and emboldened their experimental tendencies, effortlessly merging snappy songwriting and pristine production – but without constantly displaying the need to overplay their technical brilliance. Overall, the capabilities underlying this wildly fun quartet are undeniable, but at its core RACKETT is a band who you can just thoroughly enjoy, and ‘I Please Myself’ is a fun, fierce and frenzied good time that’ll have you going back for more.
