SINGLE: Eightfiveninetyseven ARTIST: The Desperation It's been a massive month of new releases, and in the mix recently is a kicker of a tune from one-man melodic punk machine The Desperation (aka Daniel Topp). On paper the Queenslander's new track 'Eightfiveninetyseven' is solidly upbeat - but the real inspiration lurking underneath the catchy hooks and rollicking beats is one of pure heartbreak. The song journeys the loss of the singer/songwriter's father to a heart attack, and it's this raw surging emotion that propels this song beyond being just another pretty piece of pop punk ear-candy. In fact, the song was 20 years in the making, and in honour of the release Dan has teamed up with beyondblue to donate 100% of the proceeds of his pre-sale packs to the mental health charity. With a debut release on the horizon (album 'Rangeville' is due out later this year), it's going to be a hell of a ride for The Desperation if this track is anything to go by.
