SINGLE REVIEW: Weird World (JAMES BENNETT)

SINGLE: Weird World // ARTIST: James Bennett

Boasting tones beyond his years and a sonic warmth to rival the sun itself, Newcastle singer-songwriter James Bennett returns with a golden gem in the form of his brand new single 'Weird World'.

Mixing influences and inspo from the likes of Paul Kelly, Bob Dylan, John Butler and Xavier Rudd, alt-folk wizard James Bennett has steadily developed his enchanting stylings over the years with two EPs and two albums, plus warming stages for local and global talent including the John Butler Trio, The Whitlams, Dan Sultan, Newton Faulkner and beyond. Now working on his third studio album with ex-John Butler Trio drummer/percussionist Michael Barker and bassist Mike Rix, 'Weird World' marks Bennett's first new material since 2017 - and it was certainly worth the wait.

With sprinkling percussion, gleaming guitars and Bennett's silken throaty vocals, 'Weird World' is a warm and welcoming wonderland that oozes charm beneath its effortless melodics and driving beats. The addition of jangly rhythms and upright bass will certainly call to mind the glory days when JBT dominated the Aussie alt-folk world - but there's a significant sense of originality that Bennett continues to weave with his whimsical folk wizardry.

Whether 'Weird World' is a definitive glimpse into Bennett's upcoming third album or not, it's certainly a captivating cut that showcases the firm grip James Bennett has on his craft and creativity - and we absolutely can't wait to hear more.
