SINGLE: Shun the Sun Because I Don't Breathe Youth ARTIST: blyolk Twisted pop magician blyolk (pronounced "bloke") has come out swinging with his latest release 'Shun the Sun Because I Don't Breathe Youth'. The pseudonym of Melb producer Sebastian Chesney, blyolk has captured a unique slice of the genre-bending world with an art-pop, grunge fusion that is melodic, beguiling and above all else - catchy as hell.
Alt-electro and RnB beats pump through the track's veins from start to finish, with blyolk's heady vocals pouring over the top, teasing hints of influences from the king of weird-pop Beck to local psychers Jagwar Ma. It's a truly unique and imaginative take on the glitch-pop phenomenon, but it's not all shiny bells and whistles - the track at its heart deals with finding catharsis after leaving an abusive relationship, with Chesney stating: "This song is about a person finding new confidence in themselves, breaking out of your shell and learning to love again".
Featuring loops Chesney created himself, the track dabbles in varied instrumentation from saxophone, mellotron and even acoustic guitar - and it's this offbeat mix of the familiar with a twist that really takes this track to a whole new level of consciousness.
Blyolk has just announced some special upcoming Brisbane shows for July amid his current month-long residency at the Evelyn Hotel in Melbourne. More info below:
