SINGLE REVIEW: The Helm (GRAHAM MOES & THE PETRICHOR)

SINGLE: The Helm ARTIST: Graham Moes & The Petrichor

Sometimes all it takes to get a smile on your dial is a hooky, upbeat tune - and Brisbane soul/roots outfit Graham Moes & The Petrichor deliver this in spades and more with their catchy as hell new single 'The Helm'. But this is no saccharine sugar-high - this is a slick and soulful offering that coats soaring vocals over punchy horns. With namesake Graham Moes on vox and guitar duties, there's a whole lotta heart busting through the brass hooks and pristine rhythm section - and no wonder, since Moes recruited his closest musical allies to help bring the swagger and style to his musical creations. Behind the bopping and rocking vibes, the song's intent packs a more serious tone : "The track was written as a heartfelt expression of disheartenment surrounding the state of our political system nationally and globally”, states Moes “in the lyrics I refer to the aware and conscious musicians we fortunately have in our society writing songs that bring social and political awareness to the population." But despite the disenchanted lyrics, the track itself is for lack of a better word - euphoric. And it's only a matter of time before this award-winning funky indie bunch bust out another track to get your toes tapping.
