SINGLE REVIEW: Backward (PINKISH BLU)

SINGLE Backward // ARTIST Pinkish Blu

Serving up a subdued-yet-salaciously catchy outing with their brand new track Backward, Adelaide's Pinkish Blu effortlessly exude bittersweet nostalgia in soft and striking fashion.

Having spent the first half of 2020 focused on the release of their debut EP There's No Such Thing As Good People, Adelaide bright sparks Pinkish Blu certainly didn't take the global pandemic metaphorically lying down. Already stamping themselves as favourites for triple j with previous releases, as well as snagging bragging rights to supports alongside The Rubens, Trophy Eyes and G Flip over the years, this precocious quartet have ventured into the new year after 12 months of utter chaos for the music industry and beyond with fresh eyes and sharpened chops, seen most fervently on their brand new track Backward which dropped into the world late last week.

Bursting with polished guitars, driving drums and crackling, emphatic vocals, Backward steadily ebbs and flows with low-key charm bubbling along throughout this alt-pop delight. And while the now-trademark Pinkish Blu ethereal synths are certainly in town on this latest release, there's a steady showing of restraint on display, with the raw instrumentation and thematics firmly at the helm.

“During COVID we felt nostalgic and were looking back on our old demos and found ‘Backward’, actually, four different versions of ‘Backward’. From what it was back then to what it is now is vastly different, but the core idea of the song has remained prevalent throughout. ...Sonically we’ve evolved to a sound we’re really comfortable with, which has given us the opportunity to be more open and wear our hearts on our sleeve.” Pinkish Blu, Brice Young

Accompanying the new tune is the perfect visual treat with nostalgic indie vibes paying visual homage to Twin Peaks and Donnie Darko in the deliciously broody music video filmed at Gawler Cinemas. Pinkish Blu may have previously been the music industry's unofficial secret crush, but with Backwards this relationship has certainly gone official: and Pinkish Blu are undoubtedly set for dizzying heights if they continue in such bewitching style.
