SINGLE Upside Down // ARTIST Loser
Loser's the name and feel-good rock is the game with the Melbourne quintet's brand new tune Upside Down coming in hot to close out 2020 in affable fashion.
As with most in the music industry in 2020, Melb rockers Loser could never have predicted the circumstances that would follow not long after their debut album Mindless Joy unveiled back in February. But amid dashed plans to tour the new sonic baby and a world gone completely mad, Loser instead careened far away from their defeatist namesake, building a new home studio in the parental garage of brothers Tim and Will Maxwell and self-recording and producing a new body of work, lockdown-style, alongside ARIA award-winning mixing engineer Anton Hagop (Silverchair, Powderfinger, Missy Higgins, Birds of Tokyo). And while the brand new tune Upside Down is undoubtedly one that sturdily churns with laidback flair and crunchy panache, it's also one simultaneously familiar and fresh for any fans of some good old-fashioned Aussie modern rock.
"Upside Down' is about your own personal response to the state of the world. You can either let it consume you, or you can find safety within yourself and watch as the chaos ensues...I guess this is my first political song, I don’t really like to write that way usually but seeing all the news that was shoved down our throats at the time and just being left there to deal with it made me angry" - Tim Maxwell, vocals/guitar
A quintessential slice of Aussie charm and the feel-good jam we all certainly need right now, Upside Down may have found its origins in a strange new world, but the end result is Loser at their most primed and polished best (and that's saying something, given the raucous praise for their previous new material back in Feb). Come for the stomping hooks and crisp percussion, stay for the positive vibes and get onboard the Loser train before this lot explode in 2021.
