Soundcheck - The Best New Releases This Week 5/07/24

Welcome to The Soundcheck's Soundcheck, where we check out 5 x new tunes that have just dropped this week!

This week, there's a brand newie from our current mixtape cover artist Felicity Jayne, plus rockers VERUM drop a new earworm, there's a new tune out from Sunbleached, Eddie Vedder smashes a poignant take on a ska hit, and Heartline share some genre-bending goodness.

Felicity Jayne - Antidote

Antidote is the second solo single from Aussie songstress Felicity Jayne, following on from her debut track, a cover of Tool's Forty Six & 2 released earlier this year.

An emotive and spellbinding take on the original by Faith Marie, Antidote showcases a softer side of Felicity's powerful musical chops. Formerly fronting the Sydney-based heavy group Intrøspect, Felicity brings remarkable rawness and melodious sparkle to her new solo output, with a sharp focus on storytelling in her vocals and, increasingly, a selection of material that clearly sparks passion both personally and creatively.

With a confirmed full solo record on the cards, Antidote is a sublime addition to Felicity's growing catalogue, and will certainly enamour both fans of her previous musical adventures and new fans stumbling onto her magic for the first time in 2024.

Antidote is out now.

VERUM - Rose

From high school friends to bandmates capable of forging angst and grunge into delightful earworms, Brisbane's VERUM have returned this week with a new track and video Rose.

Lyrically detailing a heartwarming apocalyptic love story and firmly pulsing with raw shoegaze and hardcore undertones, Rose is a powerful yet bouyant heartbreaker; equal parts cathartic and gritty, and one that you certainly won't be upset to have stuck on a loop in your head.

A second single from VERUM HQ in 2024 following their recent release Day To Day, it's only a matter of time before this absolute gem of a band gets the wider attention they have coming to them. If affable authenticity and fresh-faced nostalgia is up your alley, prepare to fall in love with your new favourite band right here.

Rose is out now.

Sunbleached - White Lace

Another Brissie outing this week, and this time it's the new single White Lace from alt rockers Sunbleached.

Taken from the band's freshly-announced new EP, I Crawled Into The Hole due out on August 30, White Lace is packed full of gooey shoegaze hues and warm melodics, with the track itself also detailing the real-life experience of vocalist Dylan Cottee getting married after changing his beliefs on the tradition of matrimony.

2024 is already shaping up to be a huge year for Sunbleached, with the group locked in to appear at BIGSOUND 2024, and also set to support Boston Manor next month in Newcastle, Canberra and Geelong. And with White Lace joining previous singles Hell is Repetition and No Cure For Life, all offering a glimpse into the quartet's impending new EP, there's set to be plenty more singalong-worthy odes and nostalgic goodness in the very near future from this lot.

White Lace is out now, I Crawled Into The Hole EP is due out August 30.

Eddie Vedder - Save It For Later

Whether you're a Pearl Jam fan or a fan of the FX smash hit series The Bear, chances are you have head the incredible new track out from the endlessly charismatic Eddie Vedder, with a stunning spin on Save It For Later, aka the 1982 smash single from British ska outfit The Beat (or the English Beat if you're playing along in North America and even potentially the British Beat here in Aus).

Starting life as a ska tune, 2024 isn't the first time Vedder has played around with Save It For Later, with Pearl Jam previously performing it live as part of a medley with Better Man; a tradition which stems way back to 1996. But for The Bear audiences, the more melancholic Vedder version appears on the soundtrack for the show's current and extremely introspective third season, notably in the opening of episode 2 showcasing a hustling and bustling Chicago waking up and starting the day.

Vedder and co. will also of course be here down under for Pearl Jam's Dark Matter Australian Tour this November, joined by Pixies.

Save It For Later is out now.

Heartline - Pink Lemonade

Shiny pop meets sharp metal via the latest single Pink Lemonade from Adelaide alt metallers Heartline.

A brand new track taken from Heartline's upcoming new EP of the same name, Pink Lemonade brings plenty of prowl alongside its glossier elements, with churning guitars, emphatic vocals and ambient EDM flourishes all thrown in alongside some clever melodic wizardry.

While leaning into the modern metalcore tropes, Pink Lemonade does also offer some sparkling fresh takes on the landscape, with Heartline proving they ain't your average metalcore band, from rollicking drum solos through to expansive soundscapes and a palpitating drop that will undoubtedly set fire in a live setting.

Tackling entitlement and the fact that opportunity takes good old fashioned hard work, Pink Lemonade is ultimately another engaging cut from Heartline, with the impending EP set to stun.

Pink Lemonade is out now, with the album Pink Lemonade due out on August 16.
