It's impossible to keep a smile from your face when partaking of the sunny stylings of Sydney indie folkster Jackson Carroll. Perhaps the sonic embodiment of a hot summer's day, Carroll flings breezy melodics and simmering warmth with colourful ease, seen most fervently with his most recent release: the jaunty sun-soaked Happyman.
Signalling a sharp turning point in a swiftly flourishing career, Happyman is equal parts unbridled joy and understated finesse as Carroll bubbles along in an ode to finding hope in any setting. And with Carroll's upcoming EP Name It After Me due for release this Friday (plus a HEAP of upcoming shows, including alongside the sensational The Beautiful Girls), what better time to grab this beaming artist to find out what places in and around his hometown make him a happy man!
HAPPYMAN (JACKSON CARROLL)
FIVE PLACES IN SYDNEY
THAT MAKE JACKSON CARROLL A HAPPYMAN
CRONULLA: Anyone who knows me knows I’m a complete and total homebody. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be on any given day than in my own home, and when that home is Cronulla, it’s pretty tough to beat. My own house aside, we’ve got ocean views, a top-notch business and some sweet places to grab lunch. Pretty much everything I need to get by day-to-day.
PAUL'S HAMBURGERS: Very specific, but I genuinely love this place. Any time I’m tossing up what to get for lunch, Paul’s is always at the forefront of my mind, provided I have access to a car. I’m about the fussiest eater on the planet but I still manage to fill up at Paul’s, and it’s a decently short drive from Cronulla to Sylvania, so I’m winning from every angle.
THE BLIND BEAR: A very Cronulla-centric list thus far, but Blind Bear is about one of my favourite places to go out for a quiet drink. It doesn’t happen very often, but when I have the opportunity to get around an apple-cinnamon whisky, I’m grinning. Plus it’s only about a 5-minute walk from my apartment, so the journey home is nice and breezy when I’ve had a few.
THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE: Despite the fact that I don’t get there anywhere near as often as I’d like, I always love a trip to the Opera House, inside and out. I’m routinely fascinated by architecture and construction (confirmed by my insane fascination with LEGO), so being able to walk around and take it all in during a performance is killer. I also get to take a leisurely walk around Darling Harbour along the way, which really gets me in a calm enough mood to observe everything without my lunatic brain kicking about.
ANYWHERE I GET TO PERFORM: The happiest I ever get by far is whenever I get the chance to perform. The Brass Monkey in particular is a really special place for this, seeing as I get to perform pretty much surrounded by friends, family and other people who continue to support me at every show. Beyond that, just being on stage, having complete freedom to follow whatever impulse takes me from song to song is just unbeatable.
JACKSON CARROLL'S BRAND NEW EP NAME IT AFTER ME IS DUE OUT THIS FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR IT HERE. PLUS, HE'S GOT A HEAP OF SHOWS ON THE HORIZON TO CELEBRATE SUMMER IN STYLE.
