MUSIC NEWS: Welcome Back, My Chemical Romance!

Cast your mind back to 2014; social distancing wasn't a thing, MH370 disappeared and, in the musical realms, tracks like Hilltop Hoods' Cosby Sweater, Peking Duk's High and the Mark Ronson earworm Uptown Funk were high on rotation for many Aussies. But elsewhere, 2014 was also the last time emo heroes My Chemical Romance last released a new single, with 2014's Fake Your Death appearing on the group's first greatest hits compilation May Death Never Stop You.

Fast forward to 2022, and MCR have not only confirmed a long-awaited return to Australia, following the heartbreaking cancellation of 2020's Download Festival due to everyone's (un)favourite killjoy COVID-19; but today, the quartet have also returned with a staggering bang, gifting a lush and lavish new tune in the form of The Foundations of Decay.

A six minute opus overflowing with polished emo, proggy injections and hardcore licks, The Foundations of Decay glistens with the familiar stylings of Gerard Way effortlessly oozing over the track as it flits from emphatic stomper to rollicking rager.

Arriving just as the band are about to kickstart their extremely anticipated reunion tour, following their disbandment in 2013 and resumption of MCR activities back in 2019, The Foundations of Decay is definitely a matured showing from the group. The emotive lilts and gothic rock undertones from the days of old still shimmer here and there, with near Ghost-like swooning verses luring you along, before building halfway through into a beast of brawny riffs, coarse vocals and some glamorous resolutions.

With frontman Gerard Way revealing in 2021 that he'd been working on new material, no one really quite knew if that revelation meant new MCR material or potentially a solo venture from the emo icon. With a heap of shows on the cards in 2022, and an Australian tour in March next year, the chances of even more music could be looking much more likely after today's new release; but for now, welcome to the next chapter of My Chemical Romance. Bring it on.
