Unless you've been living under a sound-proof rock, chances are by now you've heard/seen/beheld the crunchy sonic goodness that is Perth's Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.
But never fear if you’re yet to be acquainted with this enigmatic and in-demand quartet – 2019 is proving to be their most utterly bonkers yet, spanning a national Aussie tour (their largest to date), jumping onstage at Splendour In The Grass, overdseas appearances – plus a worldwide signing to Marathon Records and Caroline Australia at home.
With their latest single ‘Bill’s Mandolin’ gifting a buzzing stomper of psychy goodness, we’re certainly getting a delightful peek into what to expect from the group’s upcoming album release ‘And Now For The Watchamacallit’. But in between spreading their sprawling tones and adorable live antics, we grabbed frontman Jack McEwan to sound off about songs, secrets and (of course) sounds!
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND IN THE WHOLE WORLD?
The parrots in my tree at home are pretty nice to have a beer under. Horse feet clonking along an old English lane warms me up too. Danny said he likes the sound of his gate squeak when he opens it, sounds like home. Good question though, I’m filled with nice sounds now.
WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?
Man this ones a bit of a shocker for me, I must have been 8 or 9 and I saved up my pocket money to buy Shaggy - It Wasn’t Me... think the next week I purchased Wheatus But Dad had a good collection which probably saved me.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE SO FAR FOR 2019?
Fat White Family - Serfs Up! Is a great album. It’s their third release and they’ve gone a bit more electronic but I don’t mind the move. It works on this record. They played at The Great Escape but we missed em, broke my pickled heart.
WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?
I’d love to have a pedal board with every Electro Harmonix sound operating. We recently got sponsored by Fender which is a bit mad, I’ve been playing a Jazzmaster for yonks so it’s a real treat to be able to build my rig around that base. One day i’d like to trial around a bit more, time arching old computers together and DVD player feedback, go full mad scientist.
WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND OR ARTIST RIGHT NOW AND WHY?
Been cranking Tropical Fuck Storms album in the tour van lately. Love how powerful everything sounds. ‘Let My Tyres Down’ is so monstrous, it just gets better after each listen.
WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
That everyone making music in any genre is just as enthusiastic as you, that teen ego of what you imagine ‘great music’ to be is just subjective. Overcome that petty fad of only listening to one genre and stop being stubborn in tastes of what you like, it just holds you back from writing better music.
WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT YOURSELF THAT YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?
That the last 3 records were recorded in a bedroom with iPhone headphones, a $10 Japanese mic, Logitech speakers and mostly DI guitars.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS?
And Now For The Whatchamacallit release! Then keep writing and hopefully have another album in progress when we get back to Australia.
