WIELDING TOUCHES OF NINE INCH NAILS AND 90s-ESQUE FILTER, THE LATEST TRACK 'DEEPER' FROM SUNSHINE COAST GRUNGE TRIO MUULES IS A STRIKING BATTLE CRY AGAINST BANALITY, AND THE ACCOMPANYING MUSIC VIDEO IS AN EQUALLY DISSONANT ADVENTURE THAT STICKS A GIANT MIDDLE FINGER TO SOCIETAL PRESSURES - AND YOU CAN CATCH IT EXCLUSIVELY HERE RIGHT NOW BEFORE ITS OFFICIAL RELEASE!
Delving deeper than ever into their sonic arsenal as a lineup comprised solely of bass, drums, synths and vocals, Sunny Coast power trio Muules have strayed into their heaviest waters yet with their latest release 'Deeper' roaring to life with towering beats and dynamic vocals from the intrepid QLD three-piece.
Sporting a significantly heavier yet refined sound at the hands of mixing extraordinaire Clint Vincent (guitarist for Dead Letter Circus, Rival Fire and producer for Aerials, Like Thieves'), 'Deeper' finds Muules poised on the precipice of a brand new phase, as bassist and songwriter Rhys Fox explains:
"When we decided to record it, initially there was 5 bass tracks on there, and we stacked the ‘guitar’ to thicken it, but when we handed it over to Clint, he stripped a lot of those layers away, and made it huge in his own style. There’s a few layers of different sounds from the synth in the background if you listen hard enough. We feel ‘Deeper’ sets up the next phase for us, sonically".
But while their striking track calls out the quintessential 9-5 lifestyle, the brand new music video for 'Deeper' delves further into the augmenting challenges facing creatives to be ever-present and engaged publicly on social media, while putting on blast the irony that most notions of competition come from within, as the CCTV-style clip for 'Deeper' hints at in its own distinct way:
"What appears on Facebook and Instagram… it’s all fucking smoke and mirrors, and we get sucked in to playing that game. The CCTV-style is basically saying that we’re always being watched, and the rogue behaviour on CAM 4 is a subtle middle finger to the social media game we have to play" - Rhys Fox.
And while the new clip proved to be breezy to shoot, in a stunning display of art-imitating-life, 'Deeper' was in itself no picnic to bring to life, with the ultimate sense of visual unease spilling over into the editing process:
"The previous proper clips we have done (‘Butch Teeth’ and ‘Unabated’) were all storyboarded, shot for shot, and though they took longer to get the footage, it all fell into place when editing. With ‘Deeper’, I breathed a sigh of relief when the concept worked (particularly in the middle eight section). My mental health took a bit of a battering, but I surfaced unscathed with a little help from Nick and Nath, and more importantly my wife. I’ve always been a stickler for storyboarding, and just didn’t in this case. Lesson learned there, and I’m glad the clip turned out, and supports the song" - Rhys Fox.
'Deeper' will officially erupt into the world this week, with the Muules lads hitting the road for a string of new release shows in Ipswich this Friday July 26th, and then Saturday July 27th at The Zoo in Brisbane. But for now, do yourself a favour and go grab a sneak peek at the brand new clip and prepare yourself to fall deeper in love with Muules and their rockin' tunes.
