2025 might be punctuated by chaos and uncertainty, but late last week this year took an extremely positive turn courtesy of a brand new track, my mind is a mountain, from multi-Platinum and GRAMMY Award-winning Sacramento rockers Deftones, as well as the confirmation that this brand new chapter is building towards a 10th studio album, private music.

Premiering the new tune with Zane Lowe on his World Record segment, Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Frank Delgado unpacked the creation of their upcoming new full-length album, while also candidly sharing memories and looking to the future - a highly recommended chat here if you haven't already checked it out.

But back momentarily to the new music at hand, my mind is a mountain is everything you could want in a Deftones tune: lush textures, gaze-y moments, metal hues, raw delivery and the ever-hypnotic presence of Chino Moreno hovering over the instrumentals like an all-knowing, all-seeing sorcerer capable of bewitching and obliterating in the blink of an eye.

With a decent couple of years between new music, the ever-burning question that seems to be on people's lips when it comes to a band like Deftones this far into their career and with such a stalwart legacy is "was it worth the wait?" or "how does it stack up to their earlier work?". In a nutshell, my mind is a mountain is a clever balance of the gamut of the Deftones arsenal, with enough misty allure and simmering foundations to grab your attention and stay stuck under your skin long after your first listen.

Ultimately, my mind is a mountain isn't bombastic or attention-seeking; instead it elegantly grips and inevitably grips your consciousness in the sinewy Deftones trademark we know and love them for.

Deftones notably recorded and co-produced private music in various locations in California including Malibu and Joshua Tree as well as Nashville, Tennessee with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz. It marks their third collaboration with Raskulinecz who had previously helmed Diamond Eyes (2010) and Koi No Yokan (2012).

Stay tuned for more Deftones noise to come ahead of the release of private music on August 22 (via Reprise/Warner Records), and check out my mind is a mountain below:
